PostSubject: A customer's issue   3/12/2009, 19:42

I have a customer who builds web sites for businesses. He says that from his home and from one of his customer's , he is not able to get on godaddy.com. He says he has had this issue before with us. His signal levels on our end are perfect. Tech Support gave him some suggestions none of which helped. I swapped and provisioned a new modem for him, his system would not recognize it. So he returned it keeping his current modem he has a router. Has Windows XP operating system. Not sure I remember anything else about his system. Just curious mostly. Why would one site be blocked for the last few months when he could get on it previously?

Any suggestions I will pass onto him.

Hi Holly,

It could be that his Host files are hijack... therefore he has a Trojan.

When did this start to happen... cause there was a recent minor Trojan and Microsoft created a patch for it on March the 9th.

To be honest i can't recall the name.... asked if he run all his scans and ask if he has tried surfing to sites such as McAfee, Kaspersky, Avast and such security sites... if he cannot log on to those sites he should. However, still ask him to run his scans and if he still says he is clean there is a way to go into the host files and see if all is well... lol

Right Repa?! Smile

Others have the same or similar problem with godaddy. This is not a new problem, and I am still reseaching this problem. From what you describe, it doesn't sound like a hijack. I host my website with godaddy and have had no problems so far. If I come up with a potential solution, I'll post it.

Just off the top of my head, to get around the problem, that person could try putting the URL for godaddy in his Trusted Sites table, and the IP address that he wants to go to in the hosts file and see if that fixes the problem. Don't know that that will work, but it's worth a try. It probably has something to do with the IE browser settings, but I'm not sure what yet. Did this happen right after a recent Windows Update? Which browser is he using?

I think he uses IE.

He assures me it is not after a Windows Update. He has never had a problem on his computer because of a Windows Update. LOL that right there makes me wonder.

He does know his way around a computer we have talked enough for me to realize that. He said something about looking at the signal and seeing nodes in the way??? We use Nodes as part of the cable system to transfer cable etc from spot to spot. But the Technical Supervisor says he must mean a different kind of node. What does the customer mean when he can "see" nodes? His explanations are over my head and unclear... besides he has that condescending tone of voice like he is talking to a difficult child.

I wanted to ask him if it was an ID 10 T error, but he does not appreciate that type of humor...

I will pass these things on to him when he comes in.

You can find the definition of a network node HERE!

I don't know why your customer is having the problem on one machine and not another, and there aren't any good answers to this out there. A fair number of people complain about this, but no real solutions are offered that work.

I can't test this because I'm not having his problem, but suggest that your customer set up his browser to use a proxy server to get around this problem on that machine. Here are instructions for doing it in IE6:

1. On the Tools menu in Internet Explorer, click Internet Options, click the Connections tab, and then click LAN Settings.

2. Under Proxy server, click to select the Use a proxy server for your LAN check box.

3. In the Address box, type the IP address of the proxy server.

4. In the Port box, type the port number that is used by the proxy server for client connections (by default, 8080).

5. You can click to select the Bypass proxy server for local addresses check box if you do not want the proxy server computer to be used when you connect to a computer on the local network (this may speed up performance).

6. Click OK to close the LAN Settings dialog box.

7. Click OK again to close the Internet Options dialog

If he doesn't know of a proxy server to reference, he can find free proxy servers here:

http://www.freeproxy.ru/en/free_proxy/get.htm

If he tries this, please let us know if it works. If he has a browser other than IE6, he will have to look for where the above options are for that browser.

Just saw him today for the first time... I showed him what you said. He is gonna check out the proxy thing. He is thinking tho that it was something he inadvertently did. Referred him to the board and you if he has more questions. He also said he will relay information to me. So I can keep you and me up to date. Smile
