PostSubject: new internet   1/10/2009, 16:02

Let me try to get this as clear as I can as it's kinda confusing...

Okay - I got new internet though comcast cable. On one computer we get 14mbps or 11 just depends, but anyway, on mine im just over what i had with verizon. I get like 1.5mbps, and we got a new router and both are on it i think, when I'm downloading files on my pc i get my computer running really slow and my mouse jumps and don't move slowly. It don't do that on the other computer. Also, sometimes i get this thing that comes up wanting me to connect to the internet when im already connected...i hit cancel and it goes off and everythign is fine, im not sure if that has anything to do with it... i guess what im trying to say is the net in my room is screwed up. I ran all my scans and cleaners, nothing at all found. I'm not getting the speeds I should be, but i am in the family pc. any help? It sucks that when im downloading its not starting at max speeds for one i takes forever to reach 200 kbps or what ever and i never reach it as the file im downloading isnt big maybe 5 megs and what not. thanks...did i mention that when i download the mouse jumps and stuff, i know i did

Gees Wee I don't know what to tell you. I was under the impression Comcast was the same as Cable which I do have. My speed is 5mb as Cable upgraded and no more 3mbs...I don't experience problems with my mouse at all...Actually I'm happy with my speeds...I know Fay has Comcast I believe so anyways...Maybe the slow speeds have something to do with more than one computer set up a network at your house...if you just got it call Comcast and have them come over and check it out..They may not have hooked it up correctly...

Of course the more stuff you download the slower your computer will go...Or what you have set to start when windows starts...Maybe you can get rid of some of the things running in the background...Repa would be better at explaining this...Not me... Smile

Good Luck, Speedy

Try both of the following in order:

1. Start > Run > Type cmd and click ok. On the cmd line that appears, type the following exactly as shown:

netsh winsock reset

and hit the Enter key.

2. Take a look at this Tut, do what it says, and see if it helps:

Hi I work for a cable company. What I am told to tell customers is to call tech support, it maybe your modem or a signal issue. They may also blame your Antivirus program. My techs tell me to refer customers to Speakeasy.net. This will tell you what speed is getting to your computer. If your speeds on this site are what COmcast says you should get you may get limited help from their tech support but they should help you eliminate things that are there issues.

Just my 2 cents, Hope this helps.

Here is what i got as recamended. I didn't find where they told me to how to do it; unless it where in the faq...

Choose RWIN between 102200 and 270100 (FAQ #586)
Vista has no tunable TCP settings
Read the tweak FAQ

Observations:
Good data stream (no/few rexmits)

Observations:
Become pingable
if you need basic packet loss tests done
Check tweak FAQ
(EDIT) I downloaded what they told me, but it says in the faq or somehwere ont here Vista don't have editable TCP, so is it worth even downloading since that's all I had to change?

Oh, and that cmd thing and what to type in the black box or what ever it worked look:

what ever that did was awesome.

I forget that you are on a Vista machine - you need to remind me of that when you ask for help in solving a problem.

TCP/IP stack Winsock settings in Windows Vista can get corrupted, causing errors and problems with Internet connectivity. Corrupt Winsock or Windows sockets configuration can be due to a lot of reasons. What the netsh winsock reset command does is it resets Winsock Catalog to a clean state or default configuration. It removes all Winsock LSP (Layered Service Providers) previously installed, including the potential malfunctioned LSP that causes loss of network packets transmission failure.

Glad that the netsh command fixed your problem. If all is working to your satisfaction now, then I wouldn't try to change anything else - i.e., don't fix what isn't broken!

If you are interested in learning about optimizing the MTU and RWIN settings in Vista and how you can control them, you can read about it here:
