I am not sure which forum this should go in.

I have OE working - but it makes me sign in each time I open it. When the log on window pops up, the Rember Password box is checked but is grayed out.

What do I have messed up that is causing this?

Fay

Fay, check the following:

1. Select Tools > Accounts > Mail tab and highlight your mail account.

2. Now, select the Properties button. The properties window will appear.

3. Select the Servers tab in the properties window. Check that you have Account Name and Password filled out and that the box beside "Remember password" is checked.

4. Click OK and Close to exit the windows.

Hope this was your problem. If not, have you completed all the Windows updates since you got your computer back?

Repa,

I went and checked. The rememeber password is checked, but the password is blank. I tried entering the password again, but it seems to not be saving it.

The guy that worked on my computer told me he would get the windows udpdates. I went out to check anyway and it said there were no critical updates.

I think I am going to put this aside for tonight. If you think of anything else let me know.

Thanks,
Fay

Fay, generally this is caused by a problem in the Registry with the Protected Storage System Provider key. I found the following instructions in 2 different places for correcting this problem, which also apply to Outlook as well as Outlook Express:

A. First, Back Up The Registry by creating a new restore point, or back up this registry key before making modifications:

1. Click Start, Run, and type regedit in the box, and then click OK.

2. In the left panel, click the pluses next to:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER
Software
Microsoft

3. Right click on Protected Storage System Provider and select Export.

4. In the File name box, type a unique name for the key.

5. In the Save In box, click a location for the file to be saved (the Desktop is recommended).

6. Click Save

B. Change the Permissions

1. Still in the Registry, Right click on Protected Storage System Provider and select Permissions.

2. Click the user name for the user that is currently logged on and ensure that Read and Full Control permissions are both set to “Allow”.

3. Click on the Advanced button, and select the Permissions tab.

4. Highlight the currently logged on user, and make sure that Full Control is listed in the Permissions column, and that This Key and Subkeys is listed in the Apply To column.

5. Place a check mark in the box for “Replace Permission Entries on all Child Objects with Entries Shown Here that Apply to Child Objects”.

6. Click Apply.

7. A box will appear asking if you are sure you want to do this; click Yes.

8. Click OK and then Click OK again to return to the Registry Editor.

C. Delete the Key

1. Click the plus sign next to Protected Storage System Provider key.

2. Right click the user sub-key folder that will look similar to:

S-1-5-21-3723271197-400000000-0000000000-0000.

3. Click Delete and then click Yes in the Confirm Key Delete dialog box that appears.

4. Each identity may have a sub-key under the Protected Storage System Provider key. Delete all of the user sub-key folders under the Protected Storage System Provider key using the same method.

5. Close the Registry and Reboot the Computer.

D. Reenter Password in Outlook Express or Outlook.

1. Open Outlook Express or Outlook.

2. When you are prompted to Enter password, go ahead and retype it and make sure the Save Password box is checked.

Depending on whether you are using Outlook or Outlook Express the exact method will vary. In all cases, accessing the Tools menu and selecting the choice related to Accounts will point you in the right direction. Select the user account and the option to change or modify its properties. There will be a box to be checked to save the password once it has been re-entered. It will be necessary to perform the password re-entry for each separate e-mail account. Reboot after each account change. This should complete the steps for fixing the problem of the password not being saved in Outlook Express or Outlook.

Let me know if it works ok and I'll put it in the tutorials.

Reap,

That worked. I don't understand since all the permissions were already set like you said. But I went ahdead and B.5. on you list and then did C.

Seems to have worked.

May be my imagination, but it seems to take longer on boot up before I can do anything even after the disk drive activity goes out. Seemed like it was booting up qicker before, but maybe not. Either way that will not be a problem if it is just on boot up

Thanks so much . YOu have so much knowledge.

Now as to my next quesion.
The guy that worked on my computer was able to save my e-mail and addresses. But he set them up under the regualr Administrator account. Is there a way to get them under the account i want to run from?

Thanks,
Fay

You're welcome, Fay. As to getting your email files and address book from the admin account over to your account:

1. Your Address Book for OE is a .wab file. To move your Address Book from the Administrator account to the correct folder in your account, do a search on .wab to locate it. The file you want has an open book icon beside it. It should have the name “Administrator.wab” if it is in the Administrator account. You will need to rename it after moving it to the correct folder in your account.

a. Right-click on the .wab file and select “Move to Folder” from the popup menu that appears.

b. The folder you want to specify to move the .wab file to in the “Move Items” window that appears is located at:

C:\Documents and Settings\”your account name”\Application Data\Microsoft\Address Book

where “your account name” is the name of the account you want to use OE in. Click the “Move” button when you have located the correct path as shown above.

c. Once you have moved the file, rename the file to “your account name”.wab, without the " " marks, of course.

2. Your message files are .dbx files. To move your messages from the Administrator account to the correct folder in your account, do a search on .dbx. You will see files appear with the names inbox.dbx, sent items.dbx, etc.

a. While holding down the CTRL key, hover your cursor over each file you want to move (probably inbox and sent items) to highlight them. When the last file is highlighted, right-click on that file and release the CTRL key and select “Move to Folder” from the popup menu that appears.

b. The folder you want to specify to move the .dbx files to in the Move Items window that appears is located at:

C:\Documents and Settings\”your account name”\Local Settings\Application Data\Identities\{23C96C55-F974-4F45-A580-BF75318A2DD8}\Microsoft\Outlook Express

where “your account name” is the name of the account you want to use OE in. Click the “Move” button when you have located the correct path as shown above.

Note: the above path is what it will look like to get to the Outlook Express Folder. “your account name” will be whatever it is on your computer, and that long number enclosed in the { } will most likely be different. Everything else will look the same.

Note: If you want to leave a copy of those files (.wab and .dbx) in the Administrator account, use "Copy to Folder" instead of "Move to Folder."

You're welcome Fay, glad to have helped. I'm going to move this thread to the Computer Help forum as we solved a couple of problems in this thread and I want to show it as "Resolved."
