| Repa, I've had trouble downloading the windows updates the last few months. When I try to download them, from my desktop icon in the task tray, the little sand clock(I can't think of the proper name at the moment) icon pops up, then goes away, and nothing happens. It happened again today when I tried to download & install the new updates. So, I went to the windows updates website to get them, and I had clicked "Install" and it set there for 5 minutes or more, and the install didn't begin. So, being in Administrator Level, I didn't want to keep waiting, for fear of catching a virus or something, so I canceled. Am I correct in that you have to be in Admin. level to get those updates? How do you get the updates? What's the best way to get them downloaded, & installed? |

The download takes more than 5 minutes for this month's updates, but if the Install Updates Window didn't appear showing the downloads and installs, then something isn't right. You may have a virus or other malware blocking the download.
Am I correct in that you have to be in Admin. level to get those updates? How do you get the updates? What's the best way to get them downloaded, & installed?
You have to be in an Administrator account to do Windows Update.
I do not allow automatic Windows updates. I do them manually each month. I don't discourage doing automatic updates, but I don't encourage it either. There are some updates that I don't allow, specifically SP3, Windows Malacious Software Removal Tool and Internet Explorer 7. I manually download the software removal tool from the support center so I can run the full scan, and I still haven't seen good enough reviews on either SP3 or Internet Explorer 7 that would persuade me to download them.
If you have Automatic Updates turned on in the Security Center, check in your add/remove programs to see if the following updates are there (be sure to check Show Updates at the top of the page): KB9630027, KB961373, KB956572, KB95200-4, KB959426, KB960803. If they aren't there:
1. Run ccleaner on your system.
2. Restore your computer to a date prior to when the update should have occurred.
3. Go into the Control Panel > Security Center > Automatic Updates. Select "Turn Automatic Updates off" and click ok.
4. Select Windows Update from your Start menu and choose the Custom option.
5. If you haven't already downloaded SP3, select the "review other updates" option
6. Select the critical and high priority updates you want, and then click the "review and install updates" link at top left above the updates. Then click the Install Updates button.
7. You should almost immediately get the Install Updates window showing the progress of the downloads and installs. It will take a little more than 5 minutes to complete the entire operation. You do not have to worry about your system while the Windows Update occurs as all your security systems are active and protecting you. There is no danger to your system while the update is being performed.
If Windows Update does not start or fails at some point, you need to start looking for malware. Go to Tut# 6 and follow the instructions there as you did once before a few years ago. |

| Repa, No I don't have automatic updates turned on. I only have the box checked so that I only get the Win. Update Notification icon down in my task tray(next to clock). This is what I meant by trying to download them from my desktop, by clicking that update icon in the task tray, but, I got the little hourglass(finally remembered the name), but, it disappeared, without getting the install updates window and progress bar. That's when I went to the win. updates website>I clicked the install and then got the install updates window and progress bar immediately. > then it said initializing>then starting install......, but, it just sat there and did nothing for at least 5 minutes before I finally canceled, because I was sitting there in Administrator Account, and concerned for safety. I'll keep trying to get them installed, and check back to see if you have any other instructions. |

| Repa, Did you see my last post above? The updates began installing last night as I turned off the computer. It said: Computer will turn off after updates install. Strange thing though. The Microsoft.NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack1 and .Net Framework 3.5 Family Update was included in the updates , on the Windows Update webpage, so I checked it to also install. When I checked add/remove it was not listed for some reason. Do you know why? Now, this morning, i had a new win. updates notification icon in the task bar. I'll try to post the screen shot now. Please let me know if you were offered new updates also? |

Yes, I was waiting to see what you did next.

You cannot see the updates unless the check box for View Updates is checked at the top of the Add/Remove Programs page on the right side. Did you have that checked?
Now, this morning, i had a new win. updates notification icon in the task bar. I'll try to post the screen shot now.

No, but my configuration is different than yours. I don't allow downloads for things I don't want on my system, and since I don't let Microsoft choose my downloads for me, when I go into Custom, I only get the Critical Updates and not all the other stuff.

| 3) The Win. Updates that pertain to "Security" is what I would call critical. Is that the only ones that you download & install?
Usually only critical updates that pertain to security, but there sometimes are exceptions. Depends on whether I have the application on my system, like Windows Media Player. 4) Will you look at my screenshot, and is the second one, the Security update regarding "Core Services" the only one I should install?I wouldn't install any of them, but I don't know what you have on your system that is prompting that update unless it is that CardSpace thing or .netframework 3.5. 5) Not knowing that you had replied to this, I returned to the site to ask two questions about that first update in the screenshot. That thing says Feb. 2007 Cardspace. A) Why would that thing be offered at this late date? And, B) Earlier today, when I went into Control Panel, there is an Icon that says "Windows Cardspace". Now, what do I do about that?Microsoft initially shipped Windows CardSpace with the .NET Framework 3.0, which runs on Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, and Windows Vista. It is available as a free download for XP via Windows Update. An updated version of CardSpace shipped with the .NET Framework 3.5. Since you downloaded .net Framework 3.5, that's probably where you got it. .Net Framework came installed on my Dell laptop, but when I did that update last month, it caused internet connectivity problems thru my wireless access point and I uninstalled it. Microsoft Windows CardSpace™ is a system for creating relationships with websites and online services. Windows CardSpace provides a consistent way for: • Sites to request information from you. • You to review the identity of a site. • You to manage your information by using Information Cards. • You to review card information before you send it. This doesn't seem like something you would want on your system, and it certainly isn't something I want on mine. I suggest you ininstall this unless you want it. You should be able to uninstall CardSpace from Add/Remove programs. Look again for anything involving .net framework 3.5 there, specifically KB951847 and KB959209. If you find them, uninstall them in reverse order of how they were install, i.e., last one first. |

| I'll see what I can find, & report back with my findings ASAP.I had to return to edit this. Shouldn't I install the second update shown in the screenshot, KB954459, since it pertains to Security? I just don't have a clue.Uninstall CardSpace first and anything you can find on .net framework 3.5. Then, go to Windows Update and see if it is still offered. If it is, install it. |

| Repa, Let me be sure I'm clear on this. I want to Uninstall/Remove any mention of Cardspace, and .Net Framework 3.5, that I find in Add/Remove programs, correct? |

| Yes, unless you want that stuff. .Net Framework 3.5 is what put CardSpace on your system. If you don't care whether that stuff is there or not, then leave things as they are and do the updates that you asked about above. I found 3.5 to be troublesome and removed it. CardSpace is not something I want on my system. It boils down to a matter of personal preference. _________________ Repa

| Yes, unless you want that stuff. I don't know anything about Framework, or cardspace. I didn't know it was on the computer until recently. And, I don't even know how it got on my computer. When I went to add/remove program, I saw no Cardspace, & hopefully the screenshot worked above. It will show all the Framework references in add/remove programs, except one, which I'll write in next sentence. It is WPF2_32
Now, what has got me stumped is how they all got on the computer, and the date for all of them to be installed was 4/15/2009. As I mentioned already, I don't have automatic Win. Updates. All I get is the Win. updates Notification sent to my task tray. Now, do I Remove all these Framework items, or can you tell me what should I do? |

Since you have .net framework 3.0 (you got it in the last update you did) but you don't seem to have .net framework 3.5 or CardSpace even though you indicated they were supposedly in the last download you did, and, if you aren't having any connectivity problems, I would not uninstall anything. Leave your computer the way it is, but don't accept any future updates to .net framework or CardSpace. CardSpace will be automatically downloaded if you install .net framework 3.5.
Look in Add/Remove programs and see if you have a version of Microsoft XML (MSXML)listed. If you do, then do the xml update, but don't do the others. If you don't, then don't do any of the 3 updates you showed me above.
If you are concerned about how things get on your computer, turn off automatic updates and any notifications completely. Around the 10th - 15th of every month, go to Windows Update and use the Custom button to obtain your recommended updates. If you are uncertain of which updates to select, post here with a screen shot of the updates offered and I will try to advise you. _________________ Repa

I don't know why the screenshot is so dim.? Anyway, now I need to install the XML Security up-date, out of the 3 shown in the first screenshot I posted, Correct? |
