PostSubject: cookies and log in   cookies and log in Empty9/19/2012, 01:02

If I go to log in and click on id - it brings me up a list of searl things - looks like them are maybe where i hae typed in something wrong in the past. If I select the correct one it fills in my correct password.

The log in automatically does not seem to do antying - I htought maybe that was becuase of the incorrect entries so id di dnot know whtich to use. But I dont know how to get rid of them.

Where are these stored. I ran CC cleaner and deleted the ggmg cookie from the keep list before I tried siging it.

So no I am confused.

HOpe this makes sense.

When Sam and I first built this message board, we decided to restrict certain forums to members only in order to hopefully attract more new members. The Tutorials and Computer Help forums were among those at the time. There are others that are hidden that even you can't see they exist that are for Administrators only. Part was for security, part to restrict viewing to members only, part in hopes that guests would be attracted by the topic enough to want to become a member in order to see the content. Other forums were left open to guests hoping that the topics there would attract them to become members. I guess it worked to some extent for a while until Facebook and Twitter came along.

It is your browsers that remember userids and associated passwords for websites when you are at a login screen. The message board has nothing to do with that. Userids and passwords are stored by your browsers in the browser AutoComplete History. For Internet Explorer, in Tools> Internet Options> Content tab> AutoComplete Settings button, there are options to select what you want to autocomplete and save, and also to delete the Autocomplete history; but it will delete all of it.

When you login to the message board with the "Automatically log on" box checked, the cookie is set to log you in automatically everytime you navigate to the message board, even after having shut your computer down and then come back to the board several days later, as long as you haven't logged out and the cookie isn't deleted. If you uncheck the box when you login, and later close your browser or shut your computer off, when you come back to the message board, you will have to log in again, even if you didn't log out.

Hope that answers all your questions.

Repa,

I knew that some of the forums were restircted - just did not know that Computer Help was one of the restricted ones. I do not remember having to log in to see that before - but my memeory is pretty bad.

I have some more queisons on this but need to do some more looking first. The auto log in check box is not working for me. I am going to check out some things then will post back later.

Thanks,
Fay

I had thought that the password was stored in a cookie but from what you said the cookie only tell it to do

the auto log ing - ist that correct? And from my testing - the password does nto appera to be in cookies.

The auto log in never works for me.

In CCleaner cookies to keep has:
geeksggkesmoregeeks.forumotion.net

When I click on username - it brings me up a list of several items.
Some of which look like they are from when I have typed in the wrong thing.
I select the right one and it fills in my password
I hit enter and it logs me in.

I have the automatic login box checked but it nevers does. I always have to go thru the above process.
Is that becuse it does not know which username to use? Or is the cookie that tells it to log in not there

for some reason.

Where do I look to see if the cookie is there to tell it to do the log in.
If it is the muliple entries causing the problem how do I get rid of the extra entires.

I thought maybe that list came from the same place the password was stored,
I did an internet search and it said some passwords were stored encrypted in the registy:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\IntelliForms.

I found that but since data is encrypted I can not tell anyting about it.

I do not want to use the delete password on the browser itself - becuse I do not want to delte for other

things.

Where does the list come from that pops us when I click on username?
Is it from the resgistry like the password or is is some place else.

How do I find and get rid of the garbage entries without getting rid of other stuff.

Hope this makes sense.

Fay

Userids and passwords are stored by your browsers in the browser AutoComplete History, which is in the registry, and for IE is encrypted. When you click the down arrow to select your userid it shows a list of all the ones your browser has stored for all your internet accounts, but has the correct password associated with a userid for a particular account. The password is not in the cookie. Cookie passes the userid and password to the website server to check that it is valid and then you are logged on.

In Firefox, you can actually see your userids and passwords for each internet account. They are stored in Tools > Options > Security Tab > Saved Passwords button > Show passwords button.

The automatic login box does not mean you will be logged in automatically if you have logged out previously, deleted the cookie, or if you are logging in, will log you in without clicking the login button. Its purpose is to log you in automatically without going to the login screen if you left the message board without logging out, your cookie has not been deleted, you have closed the browser, and after some period of time has passed you open your browser and navigate back to the message board again. The automatic login box is checked by default. If you uncheck it as you are logging in, the next time you leave the message board and try to return to it, you will have to login even if you didn't logout when you left, and even if the cookie is still there.

Cookies are in C:\documents and settings\Your user account name\cookies

You cannot delete the junk entries in IE without deleting them all. You can delete individual entries in Firefox by following the path I gave you above.
