I am looking at the routine maintenance tutorial, because I do not have everything recommended there. I think you have changed your mind on some but am not sure what.

When I went to the link for MalwareBytes - to go downloaqd it - It seems that it is shareware instead of freeware. Did it used to be freeware - and has changed recently? I don't know that I feel comfortable downloading shareware that I will be using regularly and not paying for it.

The shareware portion is the realtime scanner. If you select that option on the install, you get a trial period and then have to pay for that part or it defaults to disabled. You don't want to use that part anyway - just use malwarebytes as a scanner and removal of malware found on doing periodic manual scans. When you install it, the install wizard gives you the option to select it or not. Don't select it and you get the freeware version without the realtime protection. I use Windows Defender as my realtime malware scanner along with Avast for anti-virus. Windows Defender for Win 7 gets good ratings, apparently much improved over the Win XP version. I've been looking for a freeware anti-malware application that is better than Windows Defender and haven't found one. There aren't many free ones anyway. There is one candidate called IOBIT Malware Fighter, but it rates lower than Windows Defender in the reviews I've looked at so far, so why change?
