PostSubject: return labels   return labels Empty7/2/2012, 22:02

I am trying to figure out how to print return labels in word 2007 so I can show a friend.
I thought I had it sort of figured out.
I went to mailings and selected label - and entered the return address. At one point it asked me if I wanted to save as the default. I ansered yes. Next time - if I select the box for use return address - it uses the one from before.
OK, no problem there.
But now I can't remember how I got it to ask me if I wanted to save as the default. What if I want to change the default? How do I get it to ask me again and where is the default saved?

Thanks,
Fay

Fay, I do print labels and use Word 2000, but it's been a long time since I set it up from scratch. Once I had a template, I copied it and keep using the same template for different label sets. I'll do a little research on the setup when I have a few moments and see what I can do to help. Right now, our granchildren are here until the 13th and they take a lot of our time.

I can try to do some more reseach, just thought this might be something you might know right off the top. But, I know there are so many ways of doing things and this is something I can probably at least work around if I can't figure it out.
My friend does letters and mailing labels for her Red Hats. I think she has some return address labels she got from some place, but I guess when she runs out of those - she will be writing them by hand. She mentioned her husband prints his own, but she does not want to ask him to show her. I told her I would try to figure it out and show her.
She has to edit the letter for each person she wants to send to and put in their name and address. Mail merge would make it so much simpler for her. I have played with mail merge a little but need to do some more, so I can help her set it up.
She is pretty nervous about trying to do new things. So, I need to figure it all out well enough so that I don't confuse her.

Have fun with the grandkid.

Fay

Ok, here's how it works in Word 2000:

1. Open Word and select File > New. Check Template and click OK.

2. On the Tools menu, click Envelopes and Labels, and then click the Labels tab.
Show Me

3. Click Options.

4. Under Printer information, click your printer type.

5. In the Label products box, click the brand of label you want to use. Note: I use Avery 5160 as that is standard in word and easily found in many stores.

6. In the Product number box, click the number of your label. (Normally 5160 for address labels - check the cover of the labels you buy)

7. Click Ok.

8. Select New Document. You now have a Template with 30 address label boxes matching the Avery 5160 Address Label Sheet. You can save it and use it over and over for different address label groupings, saving the typed-in labels with a new document name.

If the type of labels you want to use is not listed in the Product number box, you might be able to use one of the listed labels

Hope this helps. You'll have to find the equivalent settings in Word 2007, but you should be able to get the directions by selecting Help > Index Tab, type Label and click Search.

I had never created a template and the direction I was heading was not using a template.
But, I went and checked and was able to muddle thru and create a template in word 2007. What I eneded up with, was a page of blank labels - not sure that is what you were tyring to show me to do or not. I am not sure I understand - using this method, do you have to actually type the address on each label each time you want a page of labels?

I was starting with return labels - in word 2007 there is a way - to create return labels and it will put the address on each label for you. There was one thing I did not understand - but I can work around that. You can have it save the return address and have it use it again next time. BUt I think you could save the page of lables with the address alreayd thre and just have to print it off agian next time. But I guess it is poissble you might want to use different labes and could create them again and tell it to use the same return address as before..

Maybe the template method is more for address labels - where the addresses on each label is different and may change each time?
Will be looking into that later.

I am not sure I understand using a templat as oposed to doing it the other way, but that is ok. Don't worry about this now, just enjoy your grandkids

Thans for your infoormation.

You type the addresses into each block on the template. It makes up to 30 labels per sheet. I use the same template for both address labels and return labels. It comes in handy especially when you send out Christmas cards, for example - you have an address label for each person on one sheet, and a return label for each person on another sheet. Usually I send out 45 cards, so it works out pretty good. Of course, the second sheet of the address labels and the return labels is only partially used, but I use what labels are left on each throughout the year for individual labels or small group mailing labels by typing in the appropriate blank(s) in the template where the remaining labels are on the label sheet. You can even reverse the label sheet in the printer so the remaining unprinted labels are at the top of the page. The template is especially useful as I am on the planning committee of my graduating high school class and we annually send out 109 news letters or invitations to reunions. The template works great for me and it should work great for you too if you understand how I use it and how you can apply it to either single letters or multiple letters.

So then, are you address labels and return labels the same size?

Yes, I use the same template and the same label sheet (Avery 5160) for both. This approach saves me a lot of time and extra work when I have large mailings to send.

OK THanks,

I think I just about have down the instructions down for her for doing the return labels.
Is kind of hard - cause she is so afraid of doing someting wrong.
(She once asked me what I mean by left click - and then which button was the left one. SHe is NOT dumb - she just gets really flustered with anything to do with the computer. She knows some of the stuff - but she gets upset and just goes blank. I have done that on things myself before LOL )

For the mailing labels I may end up having to show her how to do it similar to what you do - with just typing in the addresses. But I am tyring to figure out the mail merge thing. She could use it for both her labels and her letters. I think I about have it figure out.
Right now, she has to bring up the letter for each person she wants to sent it to - and change the name and address. I don't think ti will be to hard once I get it all figured out and all the steps down. But it may be more than she feels comfortable trying to do.

But I think she can do the return labels ok.

Thanks for all your help.

Fay
