Firefox Browser Empty
PostSubject: Firefox Browser   Firefox Browser Empty10/2/2013, 00:06

Repa,
1. I'm considering installing Firefox on this "new" computer I got about a year ago.....i am thinking maybe more secure than IE8, faster, etc.

2. I've got Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit

3. What do you think about my reasons, security, speed, etc.?

4. Would I need to just get the latest version of Firefox, or what?

5. And, would majorgeeks be the site to get it from, or from mozilla?

6. I did a search & it looks like firefox maybe has some problems with my system type, Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit.

7. here's the search that was showing some problems with my system type:

https://duckduckgo.com/?q=mozilla+firefox+for+windows+7+home+premium+64+bit+

I'd appreciate your input before I decide to get firefox....I don't want or need to create any new problems!

8. Thanks in advance!!

Firefox is fine, and has good security when you include the NoScript addon that you'll have to download after Firefox is installed. If you are concerned about the newer version, you can download Firefox 16.0.2 from here:

http://www.filehippo.com/download_firefox/download/6bb7efc29589d268e0d7ddfe4ebd8f0a/

I know of no problems with it and am still using it, though I don't use it very often. This is the 32bit version that will run on a 64 bit machine. It will be put in C:\\Program Files (x86). Make sure you have this Program Files folder on your machine before installing.

Repa, I do have that Program Files folder, & regardless of which Version of firefox I install, will any version I install go into this Program Files folder????

thanks..............

I'm not sure, because I haven't seen firefox go into the 64bit libarary (Program Files) yet. Some applications that are strictly 64bit go into this library, the others into Program Files (x86). It seems that the only version of firefox that caused someone major problems was V. 24, so I'd avoid that one. Other than that, depending on whether the application is 64bit or 32bit, it will be put into the appropriate libaray and it is not something you need to be concerned about. I was only asking if you had the 32/64bit capability, which you apparently do, so don't worry about which library your applications go into.

PostSubject: Re: Firefox Browser   Firefox Browser Empty10/4/2013, 16:23

I've wondered about this......when firefox used to have a new version available, when I used to have it, they would say should install it because of more security, & whatever other new things they have added to it....so, why would you still be comfortable using an old version such as
Firefox 16.0.2? And, if it doesn't make a new version, why would they encourage anybody to install a new version?....thnaks.......

I rarely use firefox, only if I'm having a problem with IE, and V16.0.2 has never given me a problem, so I'm not inclined to update it. Just my preference. They supposedly keep up with the hack attacks on browsers and put those into fixes that eventually end up in the new versions that are supposed to also include enhancements to make your browsing more pleasurable. If you want the latest version, then go for it.

Repa,

1...Did you look at the search link I provided above in my first post, in regard to Firefox for 64 bit, Windows 7 systems?

2. It seems like I should not download & install the newest Firefox for Windows 7; the 64 bit Firefox.....can I get your thoughts on this?

3. And, I will need "No Script", and can you provide me with some tips as to how to know which add-ons to allow to keep on or off...I remember you used to help me with that.....I still don't understand that stuff....I'll probably still need your assistance with that.......

Thanks....and I appreciate your help!.........

Yes, I looked at the link. I have been using Firefox 12.0 for some time and have experienced no problems with it. You can get it here:

http://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details/mozilla_firefox_12_final.html

With the browsers, I find one that works and keep using it until it doesn't seem to work right any more. May not be the best thing, but with firefox, I only go to it if IE is too slow, like when watching a video and IE doesn't keep up with the streaming, or when looking at a photo album on Facebook - Firefox seems to do better in those situations.

As to NoScript, I let it do it's thing. If I can't see something that should be there or can't make something happen that should (like watching a video, for example, or clicking on a link), I look at the site names of scripts being blocked by NoScript and pick one that seems to apply to what is being blocked. Some of the scripts being blocked are coming from obvious ad sites. Those, you don't want to unblock. I can't tell you which ones to leave blocked and which ones to enable. Every website that you go to will be different. If the website you are viewing is blocked, you will want to enable it if you frequent this site and /or know it is a safe site. Otherwise, leave it, or only temporarily enable it. If your browsing experience is satisfactory, then leave NoScript alone. If it's not, then try to find which which site has the scripts needed to make the webpage work right by trial and error, and temporarily enable that site, leaving all the others blocked. If this is a webpage you go to frequently, then leave the scripts permanently enabled that let it work the way you expect so you don't have to repeat enabling them the next time you go there.

Well, either one. 12 is on this machine, and 16 must be on the other machine that I sent in for warranty repair. Either one is good and both can be downloaded from majorgeeks in their browser section. Take your pick.

no, but cnet gives it a good review. Google "Waterfox reviews" and read a few. You'll have to decide yourself if you want to try it.

Repa,
1.   Checking out Waterfox, from what I read I decided against it for now......looking at the 64 bit for Firefox I found that they have quietly given up on a workable 64 bit.....so I wound up installing Firefox Ver. 16.0.2 from your filehippo link, since you use it & u said it will work on my 64 bit machine even though it's a 32 bit version.....

2.  I was pleasantly surprised when I opened Firefox today & got a popup from Avast....Look at my screenshot of it.....
Firefox Browser Avast_11

3.  I assume even with this Avast Security Addon I wil still need to get the "No Script "Addon also?

4.   I remembered to go to "Options" & hope I got that set up properly, & corectly.

5.  I had forgotten just how much faster Firefox was til I got it installed again....especially since recently all of the IE "Not Responding" problems...after that it really seems like a lighting bolt!   I wish now that I hadn't waited so long in getting it again!

6.   Anything else that you can think of that I need to do to keep all safe & working properly?

7.   And, I assume that I should be able to keep this Firefox Ver. 16.0.2  as long as it works properly???

8. EDIT:   11:33PM CST: I Imported my IE Bookmarks, but they are not in the same order as they appear in IE, & the Icons if front of the bookmarks appear as a broken lined  square, blank instead of the colored icons in IE.   Do you know of any way to correct this?

9. EDIT 11:56PM CST; I can't login to my email, it says enable cookies, i think they're enabled, but is their a place that says Enable or disable cookies...it also sad to clear the cache of cookies.....???????thanks

Thanks for your help!!!!.....

Unless something has changed in Avast 9 that I don't know about since I haven't upgraded to that version yet, that serves the same function as Site Advisor and does not block scripts from the 3rd party piggy-backers. You need NoScript.

Regarding your email logon, did you install the NoScript addon? If you did, it may be blocking scripts from an address that is needed in order for your logon to work that you will have to find and allow.
gmail.com, googleusercontent.com, google-analytics.com, and google.com are sites that likely need to be enabled. Start with gmail, then add them one at a time until it works.

Firefox should be allowing cookies, but you can check your settings under Tools>Options>Privacy Tab

You can open bookmarks, find a bookmark that you want to reposition, left-click on it and drag it to wherever you want it in the list. It is time-consuming, but hat's about the only way I know of to do it.

Here's some information about the Avast Online Security browser addon and problems it's causing in IE (might be why you're having so much trouble with IE, WC), and as you read on you will find out why I am still using Avast 7:

http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=138248.0

You can try disabling the Avast addon in IE and see if that helps your browser performance. You can always turn it back on if it makes no difference.
