Windows Defender Updates Empty
PostSubject: Windows Defender Updates   Windows Defender Updates Empty9/6/2015, 22:58

Repa, here's an screen shot:

C:\Users\WC Turner\Pictures\Win Defender manual updates04sept15.jpg

Have you ever had a popup with a yellow frame around it and it says "Check For Updates" for Windows Defender  Updates?  I clicked the Updates button and the scr shot is after the update...I hope it was a legitimate  Win Defender update.

What's your take on this?

EDIT: Does Windows Defender issue popups that say "Check For Updates"?

Thanks......

I've never seen a popup for Windows Defender updates. I don't see a screen shot above either, just a path on your computer to a .jpg file. Windows updates should occur automatically, plus anytime that you do a windows update if you don't have windows update set to automatic and there is a windows defender update in the list. You can also do a manual update by opening Windows Defender and selecting check for updates from the Help (?) drop down menu list.

Windows Defender Updates Empty
PostSubject: Re: Windows Defender Updates   Windows Defender Updates Empty9/8/2015, 18:45

1. Windows Defender Updates Win_de11

2. The scr shot above is the result of me clicking on the check for updates button when it was offered, and the scr shot above is after the updates processed finished, it took a while about 15 minutes or more I guess....

3. Above is the scr shot I was trying to post.....and I was supposed to have a scr shot of the popup that said for me to check for updates...but I don't know what happened to it....but the "check for updates" has happened to me before, & I've also had occasions where a popup window will say that that my Windows Defender has "Stopped Working" also....

4. So what's your take on this? and what should I do when this happens, if anything?... or should I just wait for updates to come thru the normal Windows Updates? I hope I did not mess up something?

Thanks

I don't know WC. If the Windows Defender screen comes up, you can do a manual update. Under Tools>Options, do you have "Automatically Scanned My Computer" checked? Do you have "Check for Updated Definitions Before Scanning" checked? If those are both checked, then I don't understand why you are getting the popup to check for updates.

Repa...Scr Shot:

1.  Windows Defender Updates Win_de12

2. The pic shows both the boxes are checked as you stated.....like you, then I don't understand why you are getting the popup to check for updates. That makes 2 of us?

3. And, don't I need to change the time of auto scan to a time that computer is turned on, from 2AM since my computer is off at 2 AM & I think it needs to be on, correct?

thanks......

Yes, your scans should be scheduled for when your computer is on. Maybe that's why you are getting the popup, but I don't know that for sure. I've never seen it before. I don't think you need to worry about it being illegitimate.

Repa,
On 09Sept15, I set my Windows Defender to run automatic scans at 10AM each day and they ran thru Friday 11Sept, but failed to run on Sat or Sun, & has not run today.

Do you know what I can do to get the auto scans to begin running again?

thanks..

Windows Defender Updates Windef11

Other than this, I don't know what to tell you.

Repa, the following screen shot is of Windows Defender showing that service has stopped...I previously had mentioned it stopping before but you said you had never experienced it , so I wanted you to see it, & to see if you know the cause & how to prevent it in the future?

Windows Defender Updates Win_de15

So, what's your take?......thanks

I don't know WC. Turn it back on and make sure your real-time protection is on: Tools > Options > Real-time Protection. Keep a watch on it.

Hey, what happened to my screen shot???????.....when I posted the above earlier today, it only showed screen shot partially...I tried again with an edit, & when I left the site the picture was visible.....the screen shot posting on here is iffy at best for me any more, it has changed recently, at least for me, making it difficult to post screen shots.....

Repa, I guess it works correctly for you does it not??

I saw your screen shot before, but it was posted incorrectly and unclickable. I copied the link redid it for you, but not having the image on my computer could only provide the link to click on, which works fine. I don't know why the service stopped, I've seen that happen a time or 2 before. Just restart it, make sure that real-time protection is on as directed above, and just watch it for a while to make sure it isn't stopping all the time.

PostSubject: Re: Windows Defender Updates   Windows Defender Updates Empty9/25/2015, 01:16

For some reason the last few times I tried to post a screen shot, I had a difficult time getting to work correctly, the process had changed a little, at least for me, but I had not had it do like this time....I don't know???Well, you know me and computers...nuff said!

Yeah, I keep an eye on it....& get this...I'm still having a problem getting the auto scan to work...I wish the scan when it works, would begin at 10 AM, & not around 10AM....

Thanks......
