I just read a wonderful tutorial by Repa containing many tips advising how to increase dial-up speeds.

It so happens that I live so far in the woods that the only "high speed" option was a satellite connection. No one would want to know how much that cost at the time, but I am extremely reluctant to call it high speed. And lets not even talk about uploads. I can take a nap during that time period between actually hitting the send button and the message getting out.

I am using a DW6000 modem. Are there ways to tweak this connection to increase download and uploads speeds?

Thanks in advance.

Ron,
like you I am on Satellite Internet, not because I live far out, but because I live in an RV and we stay way off the grid at times. I've never had any other broadband internet connection, so the jump from dial-up to satellite for me was "awesome", and since I still don't know any better, I am well satisfied (except I'd like better VOIP). I know Hughes offers several different plans and I understand that the more you pay, the more bandwidth and/or speed you will be allowed. Here are three user forums for Satellite Internet (these are mostly for RV users, but that is just incidental) where you can get any advice you can think of:
http://www.datastormusers.com/DSSatTool.cfm
http://www.rvnetworking.com/Products/DirecwaySatProd.cfm
http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/RVInternetBySatellite/
You might have to join to ask questions, but they're all free.
By the way, I switched from a DW4000 to a 7000s six months ago and there was a noticeable difference in speed. I don't know if there would be a difference between the 6000 and 7000s.
I read up in a couple of those groups and if I come across anything of relation to your question, I will let you know. From past discussions I gather that there is really not much you can do from your end (except switch to a more expensive plan ).

I'm glad to meet a fellow Satellite user.

There are a couple of "Browser" tweaks you can make that may speed things up a bit:

If you use IExplore browser:

For Internet Explorer users: Internet Explorer requires two new registry keys to create this “tweak”. Note that if you have used the Lan Client Configuration Utility (LCCU) provided by Hughes, it will have already made these entries. You may still want to edit the entries and increase the values used by the LCCU, particularly for the DW4020.

You will make the registry keys manually using regedit. Start => Run => (type in) regedit

Below you will find where in the registry to put the keys and what to name the keys. Navigate to the locations specified in the left pane, then in the right pane, right click and choose to create a "New" Dword value. Name them exactly as shown. Once they are there, double click on each and insert the value 15 (HEX) for the DW6000 or 40 (HEX) for the DW4020. Once you've done that, exit regedit, re-boot. Your work is done.

WinXP and Win2k: All DWORD Values

HKEY_USERS - .DEFAULT - Software - Microsoft - Windows - CurrentVersion - Internet Settings

MaxConnectionsPerServer
MaxConnectionsPer1_0Server

HKEY_CURRENT_USER - Software - Microsoft - Windows - CurrentVersion - Internet Settings

MaxConnectionsPerServer
MaxConnectionsPer1_0Server

For Mozilla, Netscape, Firebird or any other Mozilla based browser:

Open your browser and enter “about:config” as the url, without the quotes.
1. Scroll down to Network.http.max-connections. For the DW4020 make the value 128. For the DW6000 try 64
2. Go to Network.http.max-connections-per-server. For the DW4020 make the value 64. For the DW6000 use 21.
3. Go to Network.http.max-persistent-connections-per-server. Make the value 8. (Increasing this value much above 8 will create problems. Be careful with this one.)
4. Exit and re-open the browser.

Hope this helps. Note that if the above doesn't work, it can be easily reversed. If you use Firefox, make sure you record the initial values you find before you change them.

Repa,
like it said, the tweaks are for the non-selfhosted systems. like the older DW 4000: it had to be installed on the computer, and I suspect that is where the tweaks take place. The newer systems, DW6000 and 7000 are not installed on the computer at all. All you do is connect the modem to the computer, and everything takes place in the modem. You can connect the 6000/7000 modem to a router and then have several computers use the internet.
Sorry, Ron! I too thought that maybe we could inch up our speed a bit. Your uploads sound particularly slow, though - I frequently upload large pictures to on-line storage, and while it is by no way instant, it does not seem as slow as you describe. Have you tested your speeds at www.testmy.net ? If your speeds are way below what Hughes "never really promises", I read of a couple of cases (in one of the RV Satellite forums) where people called Hughes and were moved to a different transponder (after lots of complaining!).

If you are following Repa's directions, let me know how it worked. I'm a bit chicken, especially since I'm not too unhappy with my system.

Rike, the tweaks I am suggesting above your post are browser tweaks, not TCP and Latency tweaks, and they may help and can be reversed easily if they don't. Please note the following quote below what you read:

The Browser Tweak

There is a “tweak” for your browser that can significantly increase browsing performance. This is to increase the maximum number of TCP connections per server that your browser uses above the default. This tweak is especially significant for the DW4020, but will also help with the DW6000. How you implement the tweak depends on which browser you use. What number you use depends upon which device you use.
For the DW4020, since there is no HPEP proxy to help with browsing, we will set this value to a very high number, 64.
For the DW6000 the number can be much lower, in fact 21 is high enough to get the maximum benefit.

By George! I think she's got it. Say it again

The rain in Spain falls mainly in the plain.

Everyone dancing around the room in glee.

The rain in Spain falls mainly in the plain

I made those tweaks and went to youtube for a test.

Watched "Red State Update: Who's Running For President Now?" Hilarious. I recommend viewing.

But the point is I watched the entire video without any stops or pauses. A rare even around my house. A possible explanation is that the tweaks helped. Will know more as I observe over the next few days.

Great! Thank you, Repa. I wonder since I have a DW7000 if I can use the 6000 numbers?

I would think so, Rike. Try it and see. You can always go back to where you were before if things don't work out.
