| Hey, Repa,
Recently, I'm being offered a new version of Ad-Adware. Do I need to go to Major Geeks to install? Did you install it?
Thanks, wct |

| WC, I went ahead and downloaded Ad-aware v 8.1.0 from majorgeeks. It seems to be ok. Download it into your My Downloads folder and execute the installer from there. It will automatically uninstall your current version of Ad-aware for you, so you don't need to worry about that. Beware that it comes with Google Tool Bar, and don't include that when you install unless you want it. You will be given the option to include it or just install Ad-aware. Read the prompts carefully as you install, and you should be fine. It seems to work ok. | |

| Hey Repa,
Is this the link I'm looking for at majorgeeks:
http://majorgeeks.com/Ad-Aware__d5947.html
Only thing is this doesn't mention v 8.1.0, that I can see.?
If this isn't the correct site, can you please furnish me the correct link?

| That's the place and AntiSpyware | Ad-aware 8.1.0 is in big, bold letters right above the download links. | |

| Repa,
At majorgeeks, I clicked the first site for download. Then download, and >Save. The Download started & when finished, I did not receive any prompts at all. Now, I don't know where the download went to.?
Do you have any clue what I should do now?
Do I go back and click download again? I hope you know what I should do?

| Where did you tell it to go? When you click save, it should have given you a window to select where you wanted it to go. You should have selected your "My Downloads" folder. If it isn't there, do a search on Ad-AwareInstallation.exe to find it. | |

| That's my point, the only prompt I got was>Save, which I clicked, I didn't get another prompt asking me where to send it. Another prompt, asking where to send it, was what I was expecting, but, never received it. So, I wasn't able to send it "My Downloads" folder.
I'll try the search and see what happens. If & when I find it, what do I do? I assume I try to send it to "My Downloads" folder.

| Yeah, I got that screen. I didn't have to click, "Click Here If It Does Not", because the download did indeed start in a few seconds.
With Firefox, I got a full page window, showing the download, then, it said Download complete. Usually I would get the prompts on where to send it, etc., bit, not this time. Why, I don't know.
When I post this, I'll try the Search you mentioned. If I can't find it, should I try the Download again?

| I'm wondering if you clicked Run by mistake? If it was downloaded and installed instead of downloading the setup application, you would be able to verfiy that in C:\Progam Files\Lavasoft\Ad-Aware.exe. If Ad-Aware.exe was updated to 8.1.0, you should be able to verify that by hovering over Ad-Aware.exe or right-clicking on it and selecting properties to check the version. But then, if it did do the update, you should have gotten some indication that process was taking place. I really don't know what happened without looking at your computer. Try to find the downloaded setup application if you can. | |

| You said: I really don't know what happened without looking at your computer. You're welcome to look at it. Should I bring it to you, or do you want to come here?
No, I'm 100% positive that I clicked "Save". I thought the same thing, & I've already checked in C:\Progam Files\Lavasoft, & hovered over it and it is still the old version in there.
I did the Search and didn't find anything. I searched C & D Progam Files. In order to not pull up the old version of Ad-Aware, I searched, using this subject, Ad-AwareInstallation.exe v 8.1.0.
Where else should I search, and, by adding v 8.1.0 to the search, did that have a negative effect on the search?

| just search on ad-aware and see what it brings up. If if finds the ad-awareinstallation.exe, then you know. If not, try downloading again. | |

| I searched Ad-Aware and it pulled up Installation right away. I stopped search, closed Search, and went to My Downloads folder to see if it was there. Only the old version was there. Went back to search, & this time I double clicked it and Run came up, so I just ran the installation from there. It said it would un-install the old version. I still didn't get a prompt asking where to send it. After installaton, I returned to My Downloads folder, to see if anything had changed. It had not. I was expecting the old version to have been replaced with the New Version 8.1.0. I went back to Search in order to look at the path.
The path is; C:\DocumentsandSettings\Owner\MyDocuments\Downloads
I went back to search the above path to see if it told me anything. Got a window that said the path refers to a location that is unavailable. I'll try to post the screenshot when I've more time.
Do you know how I can move the set-up into MyDownloads folder?
I guess I should go ahead and delete the old setup in that folder?

| Logon your computer into your "Owner" account. Open the folder "Downloads" in your
C:\DocumentsandSettings\Owner\MyDocuments\Downloads
and either drag Ad-awareInstallation.exe into your My Downloads folder or delete it as you no longer need it now that the update is completed. It is just the update setup/installation application. Your updated Ad-aware.exe is in
C:\Program Files\Lavasoft
You can hover over Ad-aware.exe in the Lavasoft folder and see that it is the 8.1.0 version.
Yes, you no longer need the old setup application either.

| Repa,
1) The new version is really slow to start up when I click it to update it. Then, after it updates, the thing will start up again, which is not necessary. Is there any way to speed things up, and prevent it starting agin after an update?
2) What about settings? How should I do the settings, or just leave as it is from the installation of the new 8.1.0 version?

It's slow, and there is nothing you can do other than to make sure all other applications, browsers, etc., that you opened are closed. It doesn't appear to slow down the performance of other applications. It will close itself after the update and restart itself to complete the update process. Nothing you can do about that.

Make sure under the settings Update tab that the bullet saying "Do not send information" is checked under "Threat Alliance. "

1) I don't have any of those on mine. I clicked all the headings at the top of Ad-Aware when it opens up. All mine shows is: Main, Scan, Ad-Watch, and Extras.
2) What is Track Sweep? To find it I click on Extras tab.
3) When I click Ad-Watch tab, mine has Processes: On; Registry: Off; and, Network:Off. Does that sound correct?
4) And, under the Main tab, almost at the bottom, it says: The All New Ad-Aware Has Arrived. Do you know what that is?

Click on the "Settings" button above the "Ad-Watch Live! icon (toward the top right side of the window)
2) What is Track Sweep? To find it I click on Extras tab.
It tells you below the title. It does the same thing as clearing cache, cookies, history, etc from your IE browser Tools > Internet Options > General Tab when you click on the "Sweep Now" button.
3) When I click Ad-Watch tab, mine has Processes: On; Registry: Off; and, Network:Off. Does that sound correct?
Yes, only Processes is available with the free version of ad-aware.
4) And, under the Main tab, almost at the bottom, it says: The All New Ad-Aware Has Arrived. Do you know what that is?
what you currently have - Ad-Aware Free 8.1.0

Mine doesn't show any of the above that you said to "Make Sure Of".
Wonder why that is? | |

| Down at the very bottom left of your Ad-aware window you will see "Switch to Advanced Mode" in white on a blue background. To the left of that will be a rectangle with 2 squares in it. Click on the left-most square and that will switch you to "Advanced Mode," which will bring up the settings button that allows you to select the settings you want. Right now, all you are getting are the defaults allowed in "Simple Mode." When you switch to "Advanced Mode", you will see all the things I told you about. | |

| I thought I had replied to this. OK, I got switched to "Advanced Mode" without incident. A couple of other questions.
1) I had not been on the computer in a couple days. I was gonna update Ad-Aware, and as I was gonna click to do that, I noticed that it showed that it was last updated today, 12/07/09. And, since I did not do it, does the Advanced mode update it automatically?
2) Do you use the Track Sweep function?

| Ad-aware is supposed to update automatically, but I have noticed that it frequently doesn't, so you need to check it about once a week. I do not use Track Sweep function. | |

| Repa,
I've just learned that when I right click the AdAware icon in the task tray>then click update, it starts the program up a whooole lot faster than the way I was doing the update. Up to now, I was >clicking the Start menu>then clicking AdAware, and this way is much slower to open up.
Have you tried opening up the program to update this way?
