| Repa,
I'm getting a notice when trying to update ASquared that it's no longer available. I was asked to switch to Emsisoft Anti-Malware. I don't think it's free.
We lost Ewido, and did you ever replace it, you never told me? And now, we're losing A-Squared Free.
What do we do now? | |

| There is a free version of Emsisoft Anti-Malware which is a limited scanner like you have now with asquared. When downloading, you'll get the full version including all protection features for 30+3 days for free. Afterwards the unpaid software switches to a limited freeware scanner mode like asquared that allows you to scan and clean your PC whenever you want, but does not include the protection features against new infections. You can download it here: http://www.emsisoft.com/en/software/antimalware/Since after 30 days it becomes just a scanner like asquared is now, I recommend the free versions of Malwarebytes and Superantispyware instead: Malwarebytes anti-malware download at: http://download.cnet.com/Malwarebytes-Anti-Malware/3000-8022_4-10804572.html?part=dl-10804572&subj=dl&tag=buttonSuperAntiSpyware download at: http://www.superantispyware.com/download.htmlI haven't had time to update the tutorials yet, but I have found these 2 free anti-spyware/anti-malware programs and recommend them. I will be adding them to Tut#6 when I get a chance. I recommend you download and run them periodically to check your system. | |

| Repa,
Will I have to update Malwarebytes anti-malware, and SuperAntiSpyware, everyday?
Since A-Squared won't update anymore, I suppose I should go ahead and remove it from Add/Remove Programs??

No, only before you use them.

| Repa,
Problem. I tried to download Malwarebytes anti-malware first. I went thru your link you posted here. I clicked the download button. All was OK. I got small window with option to "Save", which I clicked on. Instead of next asking me where to "Save" file, a new, full page opened, nothing on it, except it said it was "Downloading". Then, at the bottom of the page, it said, Download complete. I didn't get any more boxes with any prompts, nothing to indicate that it installed, or anything.
I hope you can maybe shed some light on this.? It seems like I'm having this same problem every time I try to install anything anymore.
Do you know what I need to do in order to install the 2 programs you recommended???
P.S. I also posted yesterday on this same forum, with the subject of Ad-Aware. Would you kindly take a look at that if you have time?
Edit:12:42 PM-CDT PS, I forgot to mention that I went to Start menu, and did a search for Malwarebytes anti-malware, and it was not found.

| Do a search on the following: mb.exe If you find it, that is the installation application for Malwarebytes. Move it to your My Downloads folder and execute it from there. I'm not sure why the Save option isn't prompting you to provide a folder to save the download in. You might try doing it with IE instead of Firefox and see if that makes a difference. I've read about a similar problem with firefox that sounds like the same problem you're having. If using IE works correctly, then use that browser for downloads from now on. You might also try downloading from majorgeeks instead of the vendor's mirror site if you're still having problems after changing browsers. Here's the majorgeeks download location for Malwarebytes: http://www.majorgeeks.com/Malwarebytes_Anti-Malware_d5756.htmlmajorgeeks also has SuperAntiSpyware here: http://www.majorgeeks.com/SUPERAntiSpyware_d5116.html | |

| Repa,
Do I need to upgrade IE to the new 8.0 version? My IE is still the 6.0 version.

No, I still have IE6 too. But be aware that IE6 pages don't always update to the latest page, depending on what website you are viewing. To get the page to update, you simultaneously hold down the Shift and Ctrl keys while clicking on the refresh buttion. If you are using IE6 on the message board and edit a post, you will have to do this to see the edited post. Otherwise what you see is the post before it was edited.

| Repa, My search of mb.exe pulled up nothing, so I just opened IE and got both programs installed that way. I've also noticed Firefox acting peculiar recently. I'm gonna try the Opera browser ASAP, and see how that does. It's supposed to be faster than IE, and probably Firefox also.
Now questions about Malwarebytes, and SuperAntiSpyware. BTW, I didn't have any problems using IE, but, I just went to majorgeeks for the downloads anyway.
1) How should I configure the Settings on these 2 programs?
2) On SuperAntiSpyware, was I wrong to check the box for "Send in Diagnostic Report"?
3) There wasn't supposed to be any registration code #'s for either program was there? Cause I didn't get any.
4) Malwarebytes scan found nothing, after the setup. SuperAntiSpyware found 10 Flash Cookies, and 46 Tracking Cookies. A-Squared and my other scanners haven't been finding anything recently. Probably a good thing that A-Squared decided to quit!
5) Tell me this. Was I wasting my time updating A-Squared everyday, or was updating it( such as these 2 new programs) only necessary before a scan?

I don't let the program do that.

No.

You only need to update scanners that don't have a realtime function before you use them. But that is not true for Spybot and Spywareblaster. Those should be checked every 3 - 5 days or so for updates because they have a passive protection feature that blocks bad sites from your computer in that they both load tables in the registry and the Restricted Sites table with addresses of bad websites that IE and Firefox use to determine whether or not to allow the website to load on your computer or piggyback on another website as a 3rd party.

Beware of Download Manager install request in Ad Bar Under Geeks Logo | 10/31/2013, 16:09 by Repa | Just noticed that when I went to logon that there is an ad under the Geeks Logo that says, "your Download Manager might be outdated. Do you want to install it now?" Don't fall for it! Ignore it!
