Loal folder Empty
PostSubject: Loal folder   Loal folder Empty5/14/2012, 19:16

Under Users | (my id) | appdata | Local there are quite a few folders witn names that looks like CLSID (GUID) names.
ALL the ones I looked at appear to be empty.
I have it set to show hidden and system files.
There are 2 with a date creation date of today, 4 with a date of yesterday - and quite a few others.
Do you have any idea what they are, what is creating them?

Fay

I have them too - they are CLSID (GUID) files/folders. I've read some articles on the web about these "system" files, and the concensus is that they are created during windows update. They appear in Vista too, so it's not unique to Win 7. Someone tried moving them to another folder and rebooted to see what happened. All was OK, so after a few days he deleted them and there wasn't a problem, so looks like they are safe to delete. You might want set a restore point first, and move them to another folder first to check that it doesn't cause a problem like that other guy did. This is something that needs to be fixed, but Microsoft probably has it as a very low priority. Most people won't even know they exist.

If you are using Windows Defender or Windows Security Essentials or Windows Live stuff, that probably explains the daily creation of them. I don't have all that many, even with Windows Defender, but Windows Defender doesn't update everyday.

I did some google searches to try to find the answer - but no real answers. Some said it was opening WLM or messenger. Some said it was not that. I think I have windows defender - but don't find security essentials. Some mentioned windows update. But there did not seem to really be an answer.

I closed my WLM and re-opened to see if it would created = it did not.

I guess it is not really important, but if deleting them does not cause any problems I may go in every so often and cear that out. ! thousand is an awrulf lot of junk empty files.

Thanks for all you input. If you do happen to come across any imformation on it soemtime, let me know.

Thanks,
Fay
