Joan has asked about avatar sites. Here is some info:
If you want non-animated avatars, you can make them from your own photos, or any free (non-copyrighted) pictures you find on the web. In the past, either Repa or Keith had a tutorial on how to animate your own pictures (like Repa's Avatar). Maybe we can dig that up (I think I have a printed copy I will look for).
Ready-made avatars you can find here:
http://www.allavatars.com/avatars/ (Though this looks kind of like a teen site to me, there might be something for older generations in there, also). SiteAdvisor is green.
Samantha found the following three sites:
http://www.istockphoto.com/index.php (Beautiful photos, but from what I can see they are not free. Inexpensive, though) SiteAdvisor: green
http://www.animationbuddy.com/ These are animated .gifs, but the site has not been rated by SiteAdvisor: grey
http://www.animationlibrary.com/ This looks like a fun site for animated .gifs and SiteAdvisor is green.
The following are from my Bookmarks:
http://www.animatedgif.net/index.html Free animated .gifs. SiteAdvisor: green
http://www.gifs.net/gif/ More free animations. SiteAdvisor: Green
http://www.harrythecat.com/graphics/b.htm#camera More of the free .gifs. SiteAdvisor: Green
http://www.patswebgraphics.com/intro.htm One of my favorites - free and otherwise. SiteAdvisor: Green
Hope this will get us bunches of new avatars and .gifs to play with.
