Here is a little XP tweak that can help you with apps that you use quite a bit. It forces the app to load from "prefetch", which is much faster than normal.

Right click the shortcut for the app that you want to speed up and click "properties".

In the box showing the file path to the app's exe add the following to the address:

space (the spacebar, not the word) /prefetch:1

Don't do this to apps that you don't use much as it will waste disk space and end up being slower. I use it with Word and Firefox. It works the same with shortcuts in the "quick launch" bar as well.
