I have version 5.1.889. If your update settings are correct in Avast, it should update both the virus definitions and the software automatically. You can do it manually too (Update engine and virus definitions button, and the Update program button) from the Update screen - See screenshot below. Make sure on the update Settings screen that you have the options selected as shown in the screenshot below:
