| Repa, you ever had this happen to you.? I'd been using Ver. 2014...2006(?) for a long time, it was always letting me know that new update was available, not exact ver. number, I can't remember the middle numbers.....anyway my version was pretty old, & last nite when I was shutting puter down, the HP assistant had a red X on it....I found it said that no antivirus was found on my computer.....I did a quick check...& then turned puter off....this morning when wife turned puter on she called me to look at a small window on desk top.....it was finalizing an avast update.......So I'm assuming that Avast must have stopped supporting my version & updated it for me......Does this sound correct? & this ever happen to you?? Thanks, | |

| I don't know WC. I hasn't happened to me. I'm still on version 7, and as long as it updates the virus definitions and doesn't give me any problems, I might just stay with it. | |

| I don't know WC. I'm not having an problems with 7 and I get virus definition updates every day. I think avast may be going down the same road as others in the past have - a resource hog and problem plagued with their latest versions. May start looking around for an alternative anti-virus, but as long as version 7 works and does the virus definition updates, I'm pretty happy with that.
Are you having some sort of problem with Avast? | |

| I wasn't until last weekend, when my HP Support Assistant in task tray said it did not detect an Antivirus on my computer....no time to check it at that time as I was shutting down for the night....when wife turned computer on next day a window said click continue to complete your update & there was the boxes marked to install free Chrome, & a google tool bar I think it was, which I unchecked.....That's when I found in the Avast Forum: Topic: Avast internet security automatically updated without permission.....Yesterday a forum moderator(Martin I think) addressed this of avast updating W/O asking first, when mine was checked "manual"....today a moderator name "VIK" also posted this at bottom of page, Repa take a look please: https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=153040.90
In view of what they said I can't believe you haven't been forced to "Update" to the 2014 version?????
EDIT: This is what martinZ said on page 5, middle of page: Hi all, yes the version 2006,2007 and 2008 were forced to the latest version 2021. These versions are obsolete with minor share and for us it's difficult to keep them up to date via additional updates. Version 2021 is public for few weeks and so far running well for most of the users. If you still feel that version 2021 is not the right for you then please install the previous version 2018.

| I have 2018 and guess it is ok. Several times when going to websites I have gotten warnings -something about malicious file, but it goes ahead and loads - mainly on the jeep forum and sometimes on FB. I have updates set to manual. Yeah ,I wish some of these things would leave a good thing alone. I am still holding onto the old version of spybot 1.6.2 I tired the new version of that and hated it.
Avast may start losing some of their following. People like it for a reason. I have used it for a while and really liked it. Tried AVG first and just did not like it,
Back when I suspected some false positives, I called their support number. Was not happy. The guy wanted to attach to my computer, I declined. Have a FB friend that uses the paid version of AVAST, someone she got infected , she called them and they wanted to charger her quite a bit . She decline and her computer still is not fixed and is using her laptop for now.
Repa, if you find something you think is better let us know.

| I read all of the posts on the avast forum website link that you posted previous, WC, and my previous answer was based on having read those posts and on my own experience as stated. Yes, my avast updates the definitions regularly, and no, it has not forced an update to version 2014. As long as it updates the virus definitions, I will stick with it. In the meantime, I'll investigate whether or not there are any good free alternatives. | |

Warning! Beware of Download Manager install request in Ad Bar Under Geeks Logo | 10/31/2013, 16:09 by Repa | Just noticed that when I went to logon that there is an ad under the Geeks Logo that says, "your Download Manager might be outdated. Do you want to install it now?" Don't fall for it! Ignore it!
