Is there a way in word 2007 to turn of all proofing for just one document. I do not want to turn it off for everything , just for one document I am working on.

Thanks
Fay

I found the below, but can't verify it because I am still using Word 2000:

To globally turn off spell checking for your documents, you can do so by following these steps:

1.Display the Word Options dialog box. In Word 2007 click the Office button and then click Word Options.
2.At the left side of the dialog box, click Proofing.
3.Clear the “Check Spelling As You Type” check box.
4.Click OK.

Reverse the above to turn spell checking back on.

Hmm, well I tired it , but does not work like I wanted.

I wanted a way that I would not have to mess with the setting each time.
I have one document that I never want it to check the spelling on, but I want it to do it on others.
If I turn it off t here - it turns it off for everything , so I would have to be turning it off and on.

Also, kind of strange, even if turn it off, it still does auo-correct which I do not want either and at least for some forms it auto corrects spelling - if I type friend it will auto change to friend -even if I have spell checking turned off - kind of strange.

I could not see a place to turn auto correct off - saw some setting for it but not one place to check to turn it off.

For this one document , and maybe selected others , I do not want spell checking or any auto correct - just want it to leave things as I type them. But I still want all that to work on other documents and do not want to have to be turning off and on all the time - I will not remember.

It is really a pain to have those things happening on what I am doing.

Bummer, maybe can not do what I want .

Thanks for trying to help

Fay

p.s. I did find on that same screen a way to hide the markings for spelling errors for an individual document - but that does not stop the auto- correct that is driving me nuts.

I think I may have stumbled across instructions that will work for me. I will post back again after I get to try it a little more.

It has to do with edit h the Style - the autocorrect is turned off/on thru the Style. So, I found insructions to set up a new style , and trying turning in off there - theb will try using that style in this specific document .

I have never messed with styles. This method might not work so well if used multiple styles in the document but I do not plan on doing that.

Hope I can get it to work for me.

Will let you know.

Think I have it sop that it will work for what I am doing right now.

I have never messed with Styles and do not know anything about them , so it has been a struggle.

I set up a new style and edited the style to tell it not to Not check spelling or grammar. This then turned off auto-correct.

My big problem came in because I could not figure out how to get the new style to find the new style in my old document When creating the new style, I check the box to add it to quick style menu. This worked for new documents but not my old. I thought I should be able to find it when editing the old documents by using the styles menu and listing the styles. It may have been there but I could not find it.

So, I crated a new document, my new style showed up on the list, and copied in the whole document, and then apply my new style. But this messed up my formatting spacing.

I went back and created another new style and based in on the style : no spacing. Then crated a new document, copied in old and applied style.

Well, it seems to work- seems there should be an easier way and might be - this is just whwat I could finally figure out based on what I found.

Do not know how it would work in the version you have.

Not sure this has made any sense.

Do not think it would work very well if I used multiple styles in my document.

Anyway, guess that is it , unless you want to ask something.

HMMMM, well, looks like it is not doing spell checking , or auto correcting spelling, which is good.
But it is still auto -capitalizing - not sure why.

guess I have to do some more checking.
Do not know what else I might have missed.

Fay, you are doing things that I never think about. Now I know who to come to when I want to do something out of the ordinary! Word does do some things that I don't understand, especially in its automatic formatting and indenting that sometimes drives me nuts, but I just fix them manually.

Have you ever taken a look at Open Office Writer in the Open Office suite? Navigating in it is a little more straight forward as the options you are playing with come under the Format button on the menu bar. It is a free download at: https://www.openoffice.org/download/

It also doesn't give me problems when I want to copy and paste from a webpage. If I forget to select
Edit > Paste Special > Unformatted text from the menu bar and just use Right-click >Paste, MS Word will often stop responding, and if it does complete the paste, will use a weird font. That doesn't happen in Open Office Writer. The Open Office suite also contains programs similar to the Office suite of programs.

I still like Word and Excel because I am so familiar with them after 15 plus years of using them, but if I ever had to buy them, I would without question go to the free Open Office suite.

Repa,

Yeah,  leave it to me to want to do something weird  LOL
Problem is sometimes, even after I sort of figure out how to do some thing, I forget because I do not do it often enough.  Then if I ever want to do again I have to figure out again  Sad
I just kind of "muddle" thru a lot of things.

I could not find a way to turn off the auto cap for  just a document , just ended up turning it off  globally.  Do not really like it anyway.

Yes,  I have played around some with open office both the word processor and the spread sheet, but do not really use it.  I recommended to my brother in law.   He needed something and did not want to buy Office.  He was able to  get it and it worked for what he needed.

Problem is, as you say, I do some stuff most people do not do.  I have written an app in visual  FoxPro.  Some of the reports I wanted to do were kind of difficult.  I figured out that I could export the data I pulled and then created a Excel pivot table.  But that was a royal pain to do each month.
Then I discovered, that you can do some things  with Excel from FoxPro.  I had to created my pivot table manually in EXCEL.  But then I was able to access it from FoxPro,  put by data and send to it.
Not sure if you can that with OpenOfiice or not,  might can, but not sure.
Troulbe I have,  I keep forgetting how to set up the pivot table to make it work like it want - so is a pain when I want to create a new one   LOL

There may be a better way to do what I am doing right now.  I am doing some self study of Spanish,   using DUOLINGO , and some other websites.
Creating a word document with notes - trying to pull information from a few sources and kind of summarized some of it ,  in a way I can easily find - cause I will not remember it all.
SO,  it contains both English and Spanish - all inter mixed  and a lot of it is just phrases instead of sentences.  SO all the auto correct stuff was a big pain.   I may not have done it the best way, but I think it will at least sort of work  for me for now.

Even though I do some "weird" stuff ,  I really only know the basics of Word and Excel,  no even close to be a power user,  just do some "weird" stuff   LOL

Think I might go ahead and download OpenOffice , to try for certain things. But,  doubt if I will switch right now but maybe if I do another one that I need to do the same thing.  Now sure how well things would  copy over and I do not want to have to re-do it.  I am using tables within the document,  makes it easier to view some things.

If you want to do any of the weird stuff I do,  would be happy to share what little I know.

Thanks again

Fay

LOL - you said weird, I didn't - I said out of the ordinary. We all have our own ideas and custom applications, like computing values between Excel tables, which I have done before, but will have to review if I ever want to do it again. I'm not a power user of Office apps either - I have to look things up if I want to do anything more than the most basic document. Good luck on your experimenting with styles and customizing your documents!

I have another question, but it is not all that important, so  I do not need you to spend any time researching,  just thought I would ask in case you happened to know

I hate the extra space Word puts between paragraphs.  I have a modified style I am using for my document and   changed it to not add any extra space between paragraphs of same style
That works ok.

But I am using some bullet lists  and  would like it to not add space before the bullet list.
I did some research and it said to modify the list also.  SO I did that .  But it still ad space before the list.   Do you know how to prevent that?
Thanks

Why does Microsoft have to make it so hard.

Repa, just for your information

When I was trying to figure this out I set up several styles testing.
I went back to try out the bullet thing and on one of the styles I selected it Seems to work, other ones it doesn't. So it is possible, but I do not know how I did it..

Some day maybe I will come back and play with styles again. Do not want to get hung up on it too long right now and get distracted from what I was doing. What I have will work for me, just not what I was trying to do. But really does not matter.

I did down load open office, but do not want to spend time messing with it right now and especially with and existing document.

So I am going to let it drop for now.
