I received the following message from Microsoft today. You should take immediate action against this threat:

Today Microsoft released an urgent security update for Windows Internet Explorer. Because the flaw may expose computers to remote code execution, the severity rating for this security update is critical. From the moment we learned of the issue, Microsoft has been working around the clock to respond to this situation and provide a security update that helps protect our customers. If you have turned on Automatic Updates, your computer will install the security update automatically. If you don't use Automatic Updates, go to

http://update.microsoft.com

This update might cause your computer to restart. For more information on this update, see the bulletin summary

Repa,

I had just logged on to ask about this when I saw your post. My question is, did you have any problems after you install the update?

After I installed it, and tried to log online, I kept getting pop up boxes, saying not found, or such. And, all I had done was update spybot, and all my other AV's and anti-spyware, plus the new Windows update. I was wondering what I was going to do, since I couldn't come here to get help. I finally remembered to try System Restore. Fortunately, since I failed to set a Restore Point before the update, I had one available from 12/16/08 that I used.

After, Restoring, it worked, normally after that. I made a screen shot, but, I don't have time to see if I am able to post it tonight. I haven't posted a screen shot over here yet, and I'm not sure I can. I'll try tomorrow if possible. If you have time, you might reply with directions for posting screen shot over here. I'd appreciate it.

I was just very curious if anyone else had a problem with that update. I guess I should have tried to google it first to be sure it was legitimate or not. I was leery of it, but, since the Windows icon was in the system tray, that it was ok.

Sorry WC, I missed your post completely last month. I had no problems with that update last month. If you need to post a screen shot, create an image file of the screen shot just as you did for the other board, and then follow the instructions given here:

https://geeksgeeksmoregeeks.forumotion.net/board-functions-f12/adding-images-using-the-image-host-on-this-board-t464.htm#686

to post the image.

Just thinking about what you said, are you sure you didn't download SP3 instead of those updates? The download for SP3 comes up first, but you have the option of ignoring it and reviewing and downloading the other updates available for SP2. Some people have had problems with downloading SP3 and/or experienced problems after downloading it that they didn't have before, and so I have avoided downloading SP3 for that reason.

That's OK, Repa. Being that I posted just before Christmas I was afraid you wouldn't see it.

No, it wasn't SP3, I've shied away from it also. This was a single update, after I had installed the normal monthly Win updates. I still haven't reinstalled it yet. Of course it was back in the task bar after the system restore. Here's what it says about the update: Security Update for Internet Explorer 6 for Windows XP (960714)

I'll try to post that screen shot shortly. Almost supper time now. I'm afraid if I don't eat right away, Momma might break my plate! Laughing

You might want to wait for it to show in this month's Windows Update. I had no problem with it at all. If you have a problem after downloading it again, you can call Microsoft free for assistance. Here's where to find the number to call, as well as an extensive writeup about this security update.

The error you show in your post above relates to Firefox. Do the following:

1. Download the newest version of Firefox 3.0.5 from Mozilla at

http://www.mozilla.com

into you’re My Downloads folder.

2. Uninstall Firefox If you are using the Firefox 3 uninstaller, when asked say no to "Remove my Firefox personal data and customizations"

3. Make sure that there are no files left in the installation folder, default location C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox

4. Re-install Firefox using the setup program you downloaded into your My Downloads.

Let me know if that fixes your problem.

I've just turned the computer on for the first time today, and I won't be able to do that tonight.

1) But, let me just say, that I've had Firefox 3.0.5, for sometime now.

The last couple of upgrades Firefox has had it just begins trying to download and install them automatically, for some reason.

2. Uninstall Firefox If you are using the Firefox 3 uninstaller, when asked say no to "Remove my Firefox personal data and customizations" I don't recall ever being asked this before, is it something new?

3. Make sure that there are no files left in the installation folder, default location C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox. If I ever knew how to do this, I can't remember how now. Could please prompt me?

I'll check back on this as soon as I can. Thanks so much!

Let me know if that fixes your problem. I assume that when I had the window come up, that is in the screen shot, I had to do a System Restore. After it rebooted, I haven't had any problem since. But, I also have not installed the Security Update for Internet Explorer 6 for Windows XP (960714) either. I was wanting to talk to you about it first. After you read this, you can tell me if I still need to follow your Firefox instructions, and/or just set another System Restore Point, and install (960714)?

I thought that the error you show on the screen print is something you are currently experiencing. If you aren't having this problem now, then you don't need to do anything.

Firefox will automatically update unless you tell it not to. The path to check is:

Tools > Options > Advanced Icon > Updates Tab

If you don't want updates to occur automatically, then uncheck the appropriate box(es).

You should install the Windows Security Update.

Thanks Repa,

I just disabled the automatic updates box. Now it should ask me first.

I'll make sure I've got a restore point and install the Windows Security Update.

Do you set a restore point before you install Windows Updates?

Yes, but if you don't, Windows will do it for you before it starts the update.
