Here is an interesting link I found and decided to post it as the question of firewalls keeps coming up.

Here you can test your computer's firewall and see how vunerable you are

According to this test, it will check your computer for ports that are commonly left open. Open ports could allow your computer to be compromised. This firewall test will also check for open ports known to be used by Viruses and Trojans.

If you are the typical home computer user surfing the net, you should not find any open ports. If you do find open ports, they will show you how to lock down your system.

Here's a site that I've been using for 8.5 years, and I consider it the best:

http://www.grc.com

This domain should be considered as safe and secure as they come. Steve Gibson is a well respected security researcher (one of the good guys). Based upon his affiliations and reputation, his trustworthiness is beyond reproach.

Here's another site you should check out at least once and run the tests for browser security:

http://www.jasons-toolbox.com/BrowserSecurity/

Even if you run a firewall, keep your virus definitions updated, and don't run attachments that are e-mailed to you, you may still be at risk. Browser vulnerabilities can allow intruders into your system or allow your private data to be read just by viewing a webpage.

I have used the shields up before. All my ports come up as stealth. Since for a software firewall I just used the windows firewall - I tend to think it is my router that is protecting me. I haven't tried it without the router. At some point I need to come back to this and see what else is there and read their explanation.

Fay, it is your router that gives you that kind of protection. If I remember correctly, Windows Firewall will not give you green stealth on all ports - but it's been a very long time ago that I didn't have a router, so don't remember for sure.

As far as computer security goes, Steve Gibson's site is one of the best, if not the best out there.
